Last summer, the girls could name all 50 states and their capitals.
Since they’ve been in school and concentrating on schoolwork, we noticed the recall of these facts were fading. We hung a big map and every night we take afew minutes to review, making a quiz show type game out of it.
“Wisconsin…..”
“MADISON!”
“California…..”
“SACREMENTO!”
And so on.
Last night at dinner, the girls started quizing each other; and were struggling with the answers so we began to “Help” by naming states and then trying to give a hint.
Clark tossed out “Ohio…. In 1492 Coooluuuumbussssss sailed…..”
“BLUE!”
Eh. Geography is over-rated.

I never learned the state capitals, to my great shame. In my years of traveling, though, I have learned that most of them are total dumps.
I know – I wonder what the criteria for being a “Capitol” is ! “Hm , what city ’round these parts REEEEALLTY has nothing going for it….”
(I also tried the arguement that certain states we really shouldn’t have to memorize…like Kansas, or the dakotas)
A friend of mine works in state government and I actually asked him, once, why state capitols are such dumps. I was being sarcastic, but he actually gave a concrete answer. He said that state capitols have all the government buildings, which produce no tax revenue, so there’s very little money to support the city’s infrastructures. Which makes sense.
